Cornell University Emergency Plan
Cornell University organizes, coordinates, and directs available resources toward an effective response to, and recovery from emergencies. The effectiveness of this effort is dependent on the development of a comprehensive central plan and individual college/unit plans. The university, therefore, expects colleges, divisions and individual departments to develop detailed emergency plans. This policy includes a chain of command establishing the authority and responsibilities of campus officials and staff members, and requires that colleges, divisions, and individual departments designate emergency coordinators with the authority to make modifications in emergency procedures and to commit resources for emergency preparedness and recovery, as necessary.
Cornell University Emergency Notification Tools
Cornell University is committed to protecting the health and safety of its students, faculty and staff. Emergency procedures are in place that allow us to quickly notify authorities and the campus population when an emergency situation is underway and then provide instructions on how to respond. These communications will be carried out through the use of e-mail, SMS (text messaging) and voice messaging, and sirens/public address systems.
Call 911 (from campus phones) 607-255-1111 (from cell phones or off-campus phones) or pick up one of the Blue Light phones installed around campus. Calling 911 from a cell phone will connect the caller to the Tompkins County emergency dispatcher, who will forward the call to the Cornell Police. Dial these numbers to report incidents such as an accident, a serious injury, a crime in progress, a fire, or chemical spill.
Campus-wide Emergency
When there is a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of the University community, an Emergency Mass Notification (EMN) is written and distributed without delay to the entire University community using one or many of the campus EMN systems. An EMN notification would not be distributed only if it could compromise efforts to contain the emergency.
- If you receive a SMS (text message) or Voice message, you should promptly follow the directions given in the message and move to a safe place.
-
If a siren is sounded, you should promptly follow the instructions given after the initial tone and move to a safe place.
- Following the immediate notification from any of the above systems, you should go to a safe location and monitor www.cornell.edu/about/status; for additional information and instructions.
How to enroll into Cornell University's Emergency Notification Tools and to provide Emergency Contact Information:
EMN Systems are a critical component for emergency response. At this time, Cornell's tools are managed as an "opt-in" program. Every member of the Cornell community should enroll to receive the emergency messages.
It is also very important to record emergency contact information in the event something happens to you, this information is kept secure and for use by the Cornell University Police Department.
