This guide is designed to help you to know how to respond to emergencies on campus.

Keep this near your telephone and review it from time to time.

Reporting a Problem

In the event of an emergency, that requires immediate response to preserve life or property;

Notify the Cornell 911 Center, operated by Cornell Police, by one of these methods:

  • In an emergency – Call 911 from any campus phone
  • call 607-255-1111 from a cellular or off-campus phone
  • use a Blue Light  Telephone or other emergency telephone
  • in case of fire, activate the building fire alarm using a manual fire alarm pull-station.

Emergency Evacuation

Building evacuation is mandatory when any of the following occur:

  • a fire alarm sounds
  • an evacuation announcement is made
  • emergency response personnel orders an evacuation
  • a university official orders you to evacuate

Building occupants must exit immediately, following the building evacuation plan.

After the building has been evacuated, occupants must wait for the “all-clear signal” from emergency responders before reentering.

If you are unable to leave the building due to a physical disability:

  • Go to the nearest protected area where there are no hazards
  • Use a telephone to call Cornell Police at 911 from any campus phone (or 607-255-1111 from cell phone), or use other means to advise them of your situation
  • Give your location and room number
  • If possible, signal out the window to on-site emergency responders
  • One person may remain with you if they wish to assist you

Emergency Communications

For all but immediate notification to protect lives, University Communications is responsible for the communication about the emergency on the operating status and emergency web sites.  www.cornell.edu/about/status/

Once an emergency has progressed past the initial response period, communications will be developed based on information provided by on-scene responders to either the Incident Lead Team (ILT) or the Executive Committee.  These leadership teams have the responsibility of deciding when and what should be communicated to the Cornell community, surrounding communities, and the media.  University Communications has responsibility for communicating the message.

If there were an emergency situation, this page www.cornell.edu/emergencywould be updated with appropriate, related information.

In the event that www.cornell.edu is not available due to an emergency condition, this off-site link will be updated accordingly; www.emergency.cornell.edu.
